How We Care: Empowering Girls and Young Women
Mustard Seed Communities, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is driven by a core mission—
Women comprise up to three-quarters of persons with disabilities in low and middle-income countries (UN Women). Our programs uplift and empower girls to thrive. Explore the guiding pillars of our programs below, illuminating how we serve entire communities.
Together, we can keep transforming girls’ lives through love and care.

Our Guiding Pillars

Loving, Lifelong Homes for Individuals with Disabilities, Children Affected by HIV, and Teen Mothers

Children Affected by HIV
Teen Mothers in Crisis
In 1978, Msgr. Gregory Ramkissoon saw children with disabilities surviving on Kingston’s streets and opened the first Mustard Seed Communities (MSC) home—offering safety, care, and education.
Today, MSC serves over 750 residents across 15 homes in Jamaica, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. Through education, therapy, and loving community, they discover their worth, develop their gifts, and thrive.
We also provide homes for teen mothers in crisis and children affected by HIV, helping them rebuild their lives and embrace their full potential.

Sharing
Empowering Communities through Nutrition and Health Care
Girls with disabilities are three times more likely than their peers to have unmet healthcare needs, facing compounded barriers such as stigma, poverty, and inaccessible services (UN Women).
Mustard Seed Communities works to improve the social, spiritual, and economic well-being of the communities we serve by addressing basic human needs. Across our locations, malnutrition and limited healthcare are major barriers to growth.
In Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, programs provide food and support to families living near urban landfills. In Jamaica and Zimbabwe, our nutrition initiatives combine early childhood education with healthy meals, giving children a strong start.
Our new health center in Santiago, Dominican Republic will provide vital, accessible care for residents and neighbors, ensuring the community has the support it needs to thrive.

Community Development
Mustard Seed Communities addresses both immediate needs and long-term impact. Every MSC home includes an agricultural initiative that provides nutritious food, therapeutic activities, and income through the sale of surplus produce—helping residents and the wider community thrive.
In low- and middle-income countries, only 42% of girls with disabilities complete primary education (Humanity & Inclusion).
We provide education and vocational training to help young people and women in marginalized communities break the cycle of poverty. At Mary’s Child in Jamaica, young mothers gain skills and support for themselves and their families. In Nicaragua, women access empowerment programs at the Resource Center, while in Zimbabwe, residents participate in income-generating projects like farming and candle-making.

Missionary Movement
Mustard Seed Communities is rooted in a spiritual foundation, finding sustenance in spiritual nourishment, especially through the Holy Eucharist. At the core of our ministry’s charism is the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, recognizing the perpetual presence of Jesus Christ in our daily lives and work. This practice serves as an expression of gratitude for His constant invitation, gifts, and blessings. The overarching themes that encapsulate MSC’s Christ-centered life are “He is Here” and “Thank You Lord.”
