Mustard Seed Communities in Zimbabwe transforms communities through robust nutrition programs, care for children with disabilities, and sustainable initiatives.

Established in Zimbabwe, Mustard Seed Communities (MSC) operates a range of impactful programs in Bulawayo, the country’s second-largest city. MSC Zimbabwe manages three residential care facilities, providing loving homes for children with disabilities and those orphaned or affected by HIV. Additionally, we run five critical nutrition programs, ensuring over 1,200 children receive daily meals for their well-being. Complementing these efforts, MSC Zimbabwe oversees two preschools, extensive farming initiatives, a chapel, and a health clinic, all contributing to the holistic care of the local community.

Nutrition for a Brighter Future

MSC Zimbabwe runs nutrition programs in five strategic locations across Bulawayo: Pumula, Cabatsha, Woodville, Ngozi Mine, and Magohbo. These programs ensure that around 1,200 children receive a nutritious meal daily. In addition to the meals, the children engage in games, receive informal tutoring, and participate in spiritual activities, all organized and led by dedicated volunteers with MSC Zimbabwe. Despite facing challenges, such as walking up to 10 kilometers daily, the children make the journey on foot to access these vital nutrition program sites.

At Ngozi Mine, a garbage dump on the outskirts of Bulawayo City, MSC initiated a crucial nutrition program in 2016, providing over 250 children with daily meals to address their nutritional needs.

In response to extreme need, Magobho, a rural village in Zimbabwe, became MSC’s fifth nutrition program site in 2022, providing daily meals to around 225 children.

In the marginalized community of Woodville, children walk up to 4 km daily to access MSC’s feeding program, serving an average of 120 children.

In Cabatsha, a squatter camp witnessing substantial population growth with limited development, over 170 children receive daily meals at MSC’s nutrition program.

In Pumula, MSC feeds an average of 350 children, including those from child-headed households, and those facing financial constraints hindering their education.

Bulawayo: Mustard Seed Communities in Zimbabwe upholds its commitment to caring for the most vulnerable at Joel’s Place. Named in memory of one of the first children, Joel, who, despite spending only a brief seven months with us, left a lasting impact. This home offers refuge to nearly 40 children, most with physical disabilities. Inspired by Joel 2:21-27, Joel’s Place echoes the message that the Lord abundantly provides and cares for those who trust in Him.

Children with Disabilities and Children Affected by HIV

Bulawayo: In Zimbabwe, our homes offer a lifeline to children who were abandoned. Because of the diversity of needs across varying abilities, there is an increase in the demand for housing of children with disabilities. Freedom Home and Generosity addresses this need by providing lifelong care to children who need it most. Our goal is to offer children with disabilities a chance to thrive under comprehensive care, ensuring access to social, physical, medical, and educational services to benefit the whole child.

Education: Nurturing Minds and Spirits in Zimbabwe

In Zimbabwe, Mustard Seed Communities operates two Little Angels Learning Centers, providing education and two daily meals for 80 children. Offering foundational preschool education to those under five, we prepare them for entry into formal first-grade schools. Zimbabwe’s Learning Centers are located at Woodville and Cabatsha, coexisting with nutrition programs at both locations. Plans are underway to establish a third preschool at Magobho nutrition program, a rural area in need of schools.

Sustainable Agriculture

Three acres of Woodville’s main property are dedicated to farming and poultry rearing, providing essential produce, eggs, maize, vegetables, and chicken to supplement the dietary needs of the children. MSC Zimbabwe manages both broiler and layer chicks, maintaining a steady supply of approximately 60 loaves of bread and 100 eggs daily. Any surplus goods are sold to the local community for additional income. Despite challenges posed by inconsistent rainfall and climate changes affecting the gardens, successful crops in the past have included chomoulia, carrots, onions, cabbage, butternut squash, and maize. Our staff actively learns from neighboring farms, exploring improved irrigation methods.

Community Outreach

MSC Zimbabwe operates the Families of God program, extending support beyond the nutrition program to the most distressed families by providing a monthly grocery package. Each package contains food and cooking essentials along with a bar of washing soap. Additionally, we run a recycling project with the Ngozi Mine nutrition program volunteers and extend to provide families with food during the Christmas season.
