Bringing a little cheer to Christmas

Each year Mustard Seed tries to bring a little cheer to those for whom Christmas Day is just another day, by organising a food run for the hungry and homeless in Kingston's inner city... This year saw the biggest event yet as more donors, both local and foreign, donated food and toys for the event.

Thanks to local donations of chicken, rice, juice and sodas, this year saw the preparation of over 300 cooked meals. Cooking began on Christmas Eve and lasted well into the early morning. Hundreds of children's toys - a donation from our friends in Boston - are also wrapped up and prepared for distribution on Christmas day.

Early on Christmas morning, trucks and pickups are loaded with food and presents which, with the help of staff and local volunteers, are distributed to the needy during the course of the day.

An e-mail from Brother Garvin in Zimbabwe

I would like you to send out an SOS for lots of prayers! Two of our children died in the past week. Marcus, the one that I mentioned some weeks ago whose mother died, has also passed away. He had a growth on his neck which apparently infected him internally. The other child died of malnourishment. Yesterday evening we got another malnourised child ... his name is 'Bright' he is 3 years old but looks like 3 months! He cannot even walk. The doctor said that we need to feed him as much as possible ... it's critical!

The big problem now is that people cannot afford food ... everyday I am being faced with requests for help .... people are STARVING TO DEATH!!! In recent days I've begun to feel a bit depressed because the situation can be overhelming. But I have placed all in God's hands and we are praying 'big-time'.

Our Bulawayo Archbishop visited me last Thursday and he was in tears when he saw the suffering of the people in the Village we adopted, he has been speaking about his visit at all his Masses. And thank God I had a visit yesterday from some ladies who promised to help with clothes and blankets. Please pass out an urgent request for people to pray ... things are not good.
God bless,
Bro. Garvin.
