In the city of Managua there exists a city dump called La Chureca. La Chureca covers 38 acres and is home to 1,500 people, half of whom are under the age of eighteen. Amidst the desperate squalor the society of people who live there struggle to maintain a minimal existence from what they pull from the tons of garbage trucked in each day.

In 2004 Mustard Seed Communities felt a calling to minister to these people; the Christ in the Garbage Ministry was formed. Christ in the Garbage is committed to caring for our brothers and sisters in Christ who are living and working in dumps in third world countries.

Christ in the Garbage initiated a feeding program to address the immediate needs of the families living in La Chureca. Spiritual direction, education and skills training are also provided.

In 2006 a sewing center, Centro de Costura, opened to teach women from the dump a trade that could give them a chance for a brighter future.

In 2007 Centro de Costura was moved to a larger facility outside of La Chureca. This facility will allow the sewing program to grow and will provide Christ in the Garbage with much needed space for educational and spiritual programs.
