Kingston, Jamaica, April 2001  (Posted Apr. 9th 2002)

Distance Learning program started at Mustard Seed Communities

Having finally overcome several technical problems both in Jamaica and Ireland, (which included having to replace the computer and video conferencing camera in Ireland which was hit by lightening!), the Distance Learning project had its first online session on April 4th. The project seeks to train the caregivers, of Mustard Seed's 250+ physically challenged children, in basic physiotherapy techniques so that they may be better able to serve the children whilst also gaining new skills to enrich their jobs.

Using video conferencing equipment, a team of three volunteers - physio and occupational therapists - led by Anne Sherwin, link up with Mustard Seed Communities in Jamaica on a weekly basis for a live video conferencing sesssion. Each session last for one hour and three different children are seen in each session. Individual programs are devised and goals set for the next two months, for example getting the child to be able to feed him/herself. Each child will be monitored every two months to see if the prescribed goal has been achieved and to set new ones.

As well the practical side, the program will also address the theoretical side of physiotherapy - this is in response to a request from the caregivers to learn more about subjects such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida.

In the immediate future we plan to expand the program to include training for the caregivers at Dare to Care - this is Mustard Seed's home for babies suffering from HIV/AIDS. We also plan to start an ongoing training program for the residents of Mary's Child - Mustard Seed's home for abandoned pregnant teenagers. This program would focus on post natal care.
