In an attempt to provide Mustard Seed dependants with a balanced diet and consequently reduce the cost of purchasing foodstuffs, a generous portion of land at the southeastern corner of Jerusalem! was allocated for the development of a vegetable garden.
Derek Heaven of the Jamaica Sugar Board was instrumental in providing the heavy equipment to plough the land. Seeds were purchased and water from the fishponds - which is full of nutrients - was used to irrigate the soil.
Two multitalented inseparable individuals, who are the foundation stones of Jerusalem! - Benjie and Patrick - cultivate the garden. They sow seed, tend and reap the crops. Some residents at Jerusalem! will be involved in the process as a form of occupational training.
Calaloo, ochro, pumpkin, tomato, corn, peppers, cucumber and other such nutritious foods are produced from the garden and feed the many needy individuals under the care of the organization.
There are currently plans to extend the area of the garden so that more foodstuffs may be produced.
