In a further attempt to make the operations at Mustard Seed economically self sufficient, a fish farm was built and is successfully operating. The project has proven to be one of the most successful of all the self-sufficiency projects undertaken by the organization.
Each of two fishponds are stocked with 4000 to 6000 Talapia, commonly called 'pond fish'. These fish are reared for six months then harvested and sold.
Unfortunately because of the number of bones that have to be extricated, Mustard Seed Community dependants cannot eat the fish. However, besides its economic value, the project provides a source of occupational therapy for the residents and is environmentally pleasing.
Richard Harrison was instrumental in getting this project 'out of the ground' when he loaned Mustard Seed Communities a tractor for several months to clear the land and carve out the two ponds. Also from its inception, Clifton Kitson of Master Blend has been visiting the farm twice a month offering expert advice and guidance every step of the way.
