Caring Sharing Training - Mustard Seed Communities
Egg Farm

The egg farm was the brainchild of Richard 'Dick' Collins from Ireland who in March 1998 came, observed and quickly set up the first of two coops.

The project was a success from the outset. As a result of these efforts, after one year, the second coop was added, with assistance from a mission group from Atlanta.

Mustard Seed Communities' venture into egg production was prompted by the organization's great need for a reliable and constant source of food. Until that moment, much of the food consumed was provided by private donations from businesses and individuals.

Mustard Seed received delivery of 500 hens on March 19th 1998 and had six eggs the following day!

The farm currently holds 1200 birds, an average of 1000 eggs per day. These eggs are used as a source of protein for Mustard Seed residents and staff. The surplus eggs are sold so that the project can sustain itself economically. The first requirement however is of course the provision of protein for the children.

One of Mustard Seed's most dedicated and consistent 'workers', Marcus Livermore is central in the collection, washing and packaging of the eggs. In addition, Paul Henry of Master Blend continues to be a valued advisor on this project.
