Economic projects have always been an integral part of Mustard Seed Communities' operations and its philosophy of Caring, Sharing and Training.

Surplus income from economic projects is used to fund the caring activities of Mustard Seed Communities. Since its inception, many different economic projects have been deployed.

Mustard Seed constantly strives to be as economically self-sufficient as possible. Rather than rely totally on donations from local and foreign friends, Mustard Seed Communities strives to introduce skills into the community and to empower people to become more self-sufficient.

However, it is recognised that Mustard Seed Communities will never attain 100 per cent self sufficiency through its economic projects and will always rely on local and foreign donors.

This is in line with the philosophy of Mustard Seed Communities which is an organisation dedicated to the care of abandoned, physically and mentally challenged children (and most recently children with AIDS).

Due to the enormity of the problems that Mustard Seed attempts to address, income generating must at times take a back seat. In contrast to many business organisations, Mustard Seed cannot wait to secure funding before embarking on a new project. Mustard Seed has answered calls for help from places, as far away as Zimbabwe but without the necessary resources - the need is too great.
