Caring Sharing Training - Mustard Seed Communities
Poor Man's Building Society

The credit and savings facility called the Poor Man's Building Society is modeled on the Garmeen Bank of Bangladesh.

The society was originally formulated to encourage members of the community to save for their own homes, as most could not qualify for housing under the National Housing Trust Scheme administered by the Jamaican government.

Since 1986, a number of homes of varying sizes have been built with the help of the society. Using community methods of house building and technical assistance from Mustard Seed Communities, construction costs have been kept to an absolute minimum.

Today the Society provides loans at an interest rate of five per cent and savers get 10 per cent tax free. The Society is mainly used by mothers and/or fathers to set up Income Generating Projects so that they can provide for themselves and their families.

There are over 500 adults who are members of the society - most borrow funds. Also there are over 600 children who save with the Society. Mustard Seed workers, numbering approximately 200 are also entitled to use the Society. The Society was launched with a donation of J$120,000. The society has been very successful with a repayment rate of 98 per cent.
