Mustard Seed Communities began its involvement with the community of Bell Rock, a depressed area in west Kingston in 1989.

Housing in the area consists of tenement flats, built in the late 40's as emergency housing after a major hurricane.

At the time of Mustard Seed's initial involvement a housing scheme there was in a state of dilapidation. Seeing it as an opportunity to reach out and spread the message of Mustard Seed, a low-income housing project was launched.

Aspiring to not only provide one's housing but training as well, each homeowner was required to put in "sweat equity". Showing that your own hard work can produce positive results became a central theme of the project.

Mustard Seed Communities was able to provide on-the-job training, planning and management services, and legal and surveying services. Mustard Seed also provided cheap building supplies by soliciting discounts from building suppliers. Individuals then became responsible for the construction of their own home.

As a result of this endeavor, thirty-seven families were able to produce a better living environment for themselves. They also gained vocational skills that proved to them their own ability to contribute to their betterment.
