Caring Sharing Training - Mustard Seed Communities
My Father's House

As a result of a fire in 1987, Mustard Seed relocated its headquarters and children's home to Mahoe Drive. Officially opened in 1989, My Father's House has become a home to 54 children.

Despite the many changes in the years since its birth, My Father's House has remained consistent with its main objective, providing love and stability to abandoned children with disabilities.

Not settling with just feeding, clothing, and sheltering the children, My Father's House strives to offer the same, if not more, opportunities to its children than any "normal" child would receive.

Access to constant physiotherapy for those most severally disabled, activities outside of the home that bolster awareness of their environment, and schools catering to their special needs are among those things extended to each child.

Under the direction of Donna Palmer, physiotherapist for Mustard Seed Communities, those children that would benefit most from physiotherapy are looked after at our own therapy center, Care Plus. This has led to a tremendous physical improvement in many of the children.

Therapy also comes in the form of community consciousness. By providing the children with the chance to interact with their surrounding environment they are made to feel part of a greater family. Trips to the beach, zoo, and local parks offer them a freedom to interact with those people outside of Mustard Seed.

The values that the children learn are incorporated in their daily life. Whether it is pushing another child's wheelchair or helping the cook distribute food there is a genuine sense of altruism in their acts.

Their very spirit is spread around the surrounding community and as a result several people formally not associated with Mustard Seed have found themselves connected to the children.

Recently, My Father's House launched their "Grandparents Project" which invites the older members of the community to participate in the raising of a Mustard Seed child. Throughout the week you will find "grandparents" feeding, holding or simply just talking to a child.

The support of the community is not only felt in the "Grandparent's Project", but by several individuals and organizations as well. The Kiwanias of New Kingston have taken on My Father's House as their main outreach project and in so doing have painted the entire home. In addition to this they have made the landscape beautiful planting several flowers and shrubs in the surrounding area.

Since January of this year the Jamaica Defense Force has devoted one Saturday per month volunteering at the home. They provide the children with haircuts, assist with feeding, and play games. The JDF has been instrumental in donating not only its time but its resources as well in the form of transporting material for Mustard Seed Communities.

Through the countless other groups and individuals that donate their time and means, My Father's House has continued to ensure the well being of all its children.

This well-being is extended to the four boys now living in the "group home" on the compound. These four boys have shown an ability to live independently within Mustard Seed Communities. The goal behind this "group home" is to encourage a further growth of independence and training to such an extent that they will no longer rely on Mustard Seed Communities but instead reintegrate themselves into society.
