| Mustard Seed Communities commenced over 20 years ago as a home for abandoned and handicapped children. Mustard Seed Communities has diversified its activities over the years and now runs housing projects, community projects, economic projects and a home for pregnant teenagers. | |
However, the core purpose of the organization is to care for abandoned handicapped children. To this end Mustard Seed Communities now cares for over 220 children across Jamaica, Nicaragua, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The organization is currently constructing a home for AIDS orphans in Zimbabwe. |

Mustard Seed Communities has focused on abandoned handicapped children for several reasons, the most obvious being that these children are the most defenceless in any community.
However as Mustard Seed Communities operates in ghetto communities that are torn apart by violence and poverty, it tries to impart its caring philosophy to the inhabitants.
By specifically targeting the most helpless in society and by training local people to care for these children Mustard Seed Communities strives to impart a sense of caring and responsibility.
It is for this reason that Mustard Seed Communities do not just move into an area and build a children's home - that wouldn't work, the community would not be involved!
The community has to be involved in building the home, furnishing it and eventually working in it as caregivers. The home then belongs to the community and the community derives a sense of pride and satisfaction knowing that it can now look after its own children with disabilities.
